When did you start blogging?
I started blogging earlier this year, in March 2013. At the time, I was really struggling with the emotional demands of being a working mother to a 1 year old boy. I missed the hobbies I no longer had time for, and wanted to do something for myself. So, I made the decision to start the craft blog that I always wanted to write, and made time for it. It was one of the best decisions I ever made.
What inspired the name of your blog?
I am a scientist. Scientists come up with ideas, design experiments to test them, and then make conclusions based on the data. I realized that scientific inquiry and my creative process aren't really very different. When I am crafting, cooking, or doing anything creative, I start with an idea for a finished product, come up with a plan to make it, give it a shot, and then decide whether or not it worked. Often it does, sometimes the plan needs a little revising, and other times I totally fail. But the failures are just part of the process. I named my blog "The Experimental Home" and use the tagline, "A notebook of my everyday experiments", because I wanted to inspire my readers by encouraging them to experiment creatively everyday.
What are five words that describe you?
Silly, Thoughtful, Messy, Independent, Motherly
Could you provide us with links to a couple of your most popular posts?
My most popular project is a chevron crochet baby blanket I made for a friend earlier this year.
But, not far behind is one of my favorite projects. Last spring, I did a series of flip flop refashions, one per week. On the 5th week, I used zippers to replace the straps. I love them.
If you could offer one blogging tip to readers, what would it be?
The most offered blogging tip I have seen is to take great pictures. My tip is a corollary to that… Use awesome graphics. Sometimes you can express in a graphic things that you (or at least I) could never capture with a photograph. I use Adobe Illustrator, but Inkscape is a great open source option if you want to learn to make high quality graphics for your blog.
